On Pro Volleyball League, how will it change the sport in the country…
It’s the greatest thing happening in India for the development of volleyball. A dream-come-true for the coaching community as well as the players who are dreaming of participating at the elite level. I expect the popularity of the game to increase due to the Pro Volleyball League. The live telecast of the matches and the media coverage will motivate parents to encourage their kids to take up the sport. In turn PVL will also help the players to improve their quality of the game.
On Chennai Spartans, its strengths…
It’s a team with experienced players. Given the format of the League, I think experience will matter and play a big part in it. I expect the experience of setter Kapil Dev to have a big impact given that he is capable of handling two foreign players. That’s a big plus.
On his coaching career…
It began in 1980 when I did my Diploma in Sports Coaching in NIS Bengaluru after my Physical Education degree. I am not an Elite player, but I learned a lot on teaching, training and coaching during the FIVB courses that I studied (Level 1 in 1986, Level 2 in 2002 & Level 3 in 2012). In 1989 I got an opportunity through Sports Authority of India to go to German to undergo an international trainer course. I learnt a lot there. In 1993, I got an opportunity to work with the Cuban coach who was working with our National team. It was a huge learning experience for me. I have done my masters in sports coaching in 1998-2000, and done the Ph.D, on performance analysis during 2013-2018.
Highpoint of his coaching career…
That would be one of my player Mr. Pankaj Sharma who is most disciplined and dedicated towards training has been selected for the Indian team for the Asian Games 2018.Many of my players got selected for the National camps and played Senior Nationals several times. Four of my trainees got selected for PVL 2019. Services team winning the Gold at Federation Cup and winning Bronze at the Senior Nationals has given me an immense pleasure. Under me the Indian Army team participated in sports exchange program at Srilanka and also participated in the first South Asian Army Sports Tournament held at Nepal where we won the Gold medal.
